Recognising that Covid-19 is affecting everything we once took for granted, artists Sara Bowler and Sovay Berriman have joined with Cultivator Cornwall and CAMP to create an opportunity to share, discuss and make at a social distance, using some of the online platforms that have become an everyday norm. Agile Structures celebrates the ability of the arts to flex, and respond to a new situation. Speakers will look at the potentials and possibilities for maintaining and enriching our practices, acknowledging that here is a moment to shift our behaviours and expectations for a better, fairer, future.

• Combining a mix of talks, workshops, panel discussions, an online supper club, video DJing and artists’ Speed Shows.
• Spread over 4 days to minimise screen fatigue and allow time for people to attend as their personal responsibilities allow.
• Each session lasting 1.5 to 2 hours.
• The majority of sessions will be recorded and made available on a dedicated platform for a limited time for participants to catch up or re-visit as they choose. They will be available to view via the dedicated website until 9am Monday 29 June.

Speed Shows
A key part of Agile Structures is the opportunity for participating artists to present their work. During lockdown, artists have had limited opportunities to show, share, discuss what they’ve been up to in recent months. These Speed Shows are an attempt to address that. We’re offering eighteen 6 minute slots between Thursday and Saturday from 12-1.30pm. Six artists will present in each session followed by a combined, facilitated Q&A.
You will need to book additionally through Eventbrite for these sessions, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. We will be in touch when you have booked your slot.
We are asking artists to prepare their presentations in advance using a pre recorded PowerPoint/Keynote presentation which will need to be sent to us by 12noon on Wednesday 24th June.
Accessibility
Agile Structures will be delivered using Zoom Pro. A Zoom account is not required if you are joining Zoom Meetings as a participant. If someone invites you to their meeting, you can join as a participant without creating an account.
As this is an online event we are making an assumption that participants will be joining from their own residences and will have the tools and facilities in place that they require to attend. Edgezones Present HOMO HUMOUR

 

 

There’s a new Event this weekend in Miami’s Wynwood Art District that has just come up on our radar and we think we want to go check it out.  It’s part of PerforMIA 2020 an evening of Performance, noise, videos and experimental sound.

 

Its called HOMO HUMOUR and is a  selection of short films by queer male filmmakers from U.K, USA and Australia curated by Lee Campbell..

They all  explore the application of humour and comedy tactics by contemporary queer male artists and invites visitors to reflect upon how queer male culture has employed artistic embraces of humour and comedy as strategies to challenge, transgress, subvert and rebel. By doing so, they not only counter art history’s rancor towards and is resistant to particular kinds of humour that are only now being embraced by the most recent methodologies, these artists offer compelling ways of using humour as an artistic, disruptive, cathartic and transgressive act that provokes awareness of key critical issues relating to queer male representation historically and today.

White Crypt is pleased to invite you to the opening of Daughters of Hecate, a group show curated by Lucy Stein, 
in collaboration with Anaïs Lerendu and Adam Thomas. 
The show will open from 4-9pm on Monday 6th May Bank Holiday and will host performances and DJ set.

'Daughters of Hecate brings together six artists who work in London and west Cornwall, or both places.

It is my ambition to derail the Michael and Mary Ley Lines, which converge via my studio in Newlyn, and get 

them to rejoin at the Crypt under St Marks. London is a deeply pagan place that could slough off its concrete 

cladding at any moment with a rupture of it’s capricious will. What these artists have in common is working from 

positions of passion, obsession with mortality, addiction to viscera, to loud music and recognition that to emerge 

psychically alive from the tomb of surveillance-capitalism, you have to venture darkly into the underbelly of deep 

information and court real pain.’

Can We Still Be Friends responds to the polyphony, the push and pull, the joy and tension of solo and collaborative practices as they rub up against one another.

This exhibition is the culmination of the arranged marriage that was Syllabus III. It brings together ten artists from disparate parts of the UK who didn’t choose each other, but after 10 months of intense and immersive weekend retreats, they became close. They worked, talked and made things together, danced, wined, dined, cried a bit and then broke up after a year. Breaking up is hard to do.

Syllabus III is a collaboratively produced alternative learning programme jointly delivered by Wysing Arts Centre, Eastside Projects, Iniva, New Contemporaries, S1 Artspace, Spike Island and Studio Voltaire. For more information about The Syllabus, click here.

Guest Projects is an initiative conceived by Shonibare Studio to offer the opportunity for artistic practitioners, of any artistic discipline (dance, visual arts, music), to have access to a free project space. When you have been growing up as an adolescent in a dysfunctional home, in which, no one understands your feelings and emotions.  When you have never been free to speak or share your opinions about life. At that moment everything is falling into pieces. Pieces out of which you can make urgent responses.   

Through fearful or traumatic times you cannot make anything. Other people’s powers dominate and control you. However there becomes that moment where you begin to feel that amazing journey begins inside you my dear Love.

I will start to open all spaces for you to make a body of work that can exist in your ideas of how home can be.

When I start to make work I start to use home-style magazines to respond to with the feelings that I felt as a boy. I begin with the desire to create the home I always wanted, where I could express my feelings.

This site-specific work, reflecting a time of melancholia is inspired by Picasso’s blue period, Yves Klein’s international Klein blue paintings and the colour of the ocean beyond the window.

I try to give a sense of the boy becoming free within an interior space. I use painting and collage to urgently respond to what I already know.

 Trewarveneth Artists Stay After School.

Artists at Trewarveneth Studios, run by the Borlase Smart John Wells Trust who also own Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, are coming together to present a group show. The show named 'After School' , which refers to the building's original incarnation as Trewarveneth Infants School, will see a mix of new and existing work from the artists adorn the walls of the building for three days at the beginning of April.

The six exhibiting artists are Rose Hilton, Richard Cook, Kate Walters, Virginia Bounds,  Ilker Cinarel and Stacey Guthrie. The show will provide a snapshot of what is happening in one of the most prestigious studios in Cornwall and visitors can expect to see a wide range of subject matter and techniques reflected in the wall-based works.

Renowned artist Rose Hilton who was recently made an Honorary Academician for the Royal West Academy is known for work with rich use of colour in a post-impressionistic style. In her career, which has spanned over six decades, Rose has had a solo exhibition at Newlyn Gallery and a solo retrospective at Tate St Ives.

Richard Cook has been exhibiting for over twenty five years and was given a solo show at Tate St Ives in  2001. His paintings engage with the 'abstract broadness of form' in the landscape. He describes the 'mapping in paint' as 'akin to a repeated walk along a known pathway where space, re-invented, becomes a liminal margin of light and colour '

Kate Walters, whose recent group show 'Drawing Down the Feminine' is embarking on a tour of the UK and who has had solo shows at Millennium Gallery and Newlyn Art Gallery, uses dreams and encounters with animals 'in ordinary reality and non-ordinary reality' in order to become a 'gatherer of the archaic' and an 'explorer of what is hidden'. Kate's work was used for the album cover of Marc Almond's album 'The Velvet Trail' in 2015.

Virginia Bounds, who works from Anchor Studio – built by Stanhope Forbes in the 1880's, recently received major funding from the Arts Council to embark on an eighteen month long programme of professional development. The enabled the making of new work created in response to the landscape and evocative plantings of the gardens at Tremenheere Sculpture Park which was shown in  a solo exhibition at the park's gallery.

Ilker Cinarel, who has exhibited internationally, with solos shows in London and Istanbul was the winner of Inland Art Festival 2014 People's Choice Award. He works in many mediums, including painting, drawing, performance, sculpture and film to explore  his inner feelings of growing up in a patriarchal Turkish family. Questioning the politics that surround the family, through the indescribably personal prism of his own childhood tensions where hyper-macho pop culture spilled over into reality.

Stacey Guthrie, winner of the British Women Artists Prize 2013 and selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2014 is better known for her video and moving image work but has recently added painting to her practice. She will be showing new paintings, exploring the domestic experiences of women. These darkly humorous paintings reflect her surreal videos as she examines the cumulative effect of housework over time.

The exhibition runs from 1st -  3rd April and is open from 10am – 4pm. There is an opening event on 31st March from 6pm – 9pm where visitors can come and meet the artists and have a drink. Trewarveneth Studios is located at the top of Trewarveneth Street in Newlyn. On-street parking is available nearby.

A special delivery takes inspiration from Gilgamesh – the Epic poem regarded as the first great work of literature. The Installation represents my own epic beginning that has grown out of being both here and there, in the past, the present and the future. Between Turkey and Cornwall, now standing own two feet.
