Much of Ilker Cinarel’s work explores his inner feelings of growing up in a patriarchal Turkish family. Questioning the politics that surround the family, through the indescribably personal prism of his own childhood tensions where hyper-macho pop culture spilled over into reality. Now, as a gay man Ilker is still trying to reconcile where he belongs within this masculine dominated culture and context. Questioning intimacy and humours place within an overtly masculine context, Ilker playfully makes visible the structures which constrain societal stereotypes.
Travelling between Cornwall, London and Istanbul, Ilker makes work in a range of media, from video and performance to installation and painting.
